Jews Reclaim Synagogue in Arab Neighborhood in Jerusalem - SILWAN

Jews Reclaim Synagogue in Arab Neighborhood in Jerusalem

“And there is hope for thy future, saith the LORD; and thy children shall return to their own border.” (Jeremiah 31:16)
Nearly 80 years after Yemenite Jews were evacuated from the Arab neighborhood of Silwan, a group of activists has moved into the community’s former synagogue.  According to a news report by The Times of Israel, members of the Ateret Kohanim group, whose goal is to help settle Jews in all parts of Jerusalem’s Old City, moved into the synagogue building Wednesday morning at 1 am.  The new residents were greeted by rock-throwing from local Arabs. Border police responded to the scene.
Modern-day Silwan is located on the outskirts of the Old City of Jerusalem, and has long been an Arab farming village. In the early 1880s, a group of Yemenite Jews were settled on the southern edge of the village, where they remained until the Arab riots of 1936-1939. For their own safety, the Jewish residents were removed from their homes by the British.  Silwan was captured by Jordan in 1948, along with East Jerusalem, and recaptured by Israel in 1967. The first Jewish families began to return to the area in the 1990s.  The synagogue entered Wednesday is owned by the Kfar Hashiloah (the Hebrew name for Silwan) hekdesh, or community trust. It was occupied until recently by the Abu Naab family, but after a lengthy battle in Jerusalem District Court, the family was ordered to vacate the premises.
The synagogue is one of a number of buildings in the village in which pro-Israel activists have gained a foothold. Another like-minded group, the Elad foundation, acquired 25 apartments in the neighborhood in September. Today, according to Haaretz, roughly 500 Jews live in Silwan.
“Jews have the right to live wherever they wish in the world, and certainly in Jerusalem,” a municipality spokesman said in a statement. “To the best of our knowledge, this is a case in which Jewish residents are exercising their right to enter a building that is under their ownership and that was vacant. The Jerusalem municipality and the Israel Police are not involved in the process, nor was any order enacted against the Arab residents. This is purely a civil matter that has nothing to do with the authorities.”
Not everyone agrees. Left-wing NGO Ir Amim argued in its own statement, “The state, in the form of the public trustee, is the one who decided to transfer the property (the Abu Naab house) to Ateret Kohanim even though a Palestinian family lives there. Now the Jerusalem municipality, the police and the other authorities of the state are taking the position of ‘observers on the sidelines,’ as if this matter were not in their purview. In reality, the state supports Ateret Kohanim and the other settler NGOs, to which it privatizes the takeover of outposts in Palestinian neighborhoods in the city.”
Meanwhile, in another nearby neighborhood, approval was given for the construction of 900 new homes, much to the chagrin of left-wind NGO Peace Now. Ramat Shlomo is predominantly ultra-Orthodox, and is located in East Jerusalem.  The new construction was part of a plan originally announced in March 2010 for 1,600 new homes, a move opposed by the US. Construction was delayed due to a need for road expansion, something Peace Now spokeswoman Hagit Ofran says still hasn’t happened. However, the first 900 units are now allowed to be built.
The US quickly condemned the announcement of the construction of the new homes as “damaging and inconsistent” with Israel’s commitment to a two-state solution.  “This is a disappointing development, and we’re concerned about it just as a new Israeli Government has been announced,” US State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said on Thursday at a press briefing. “Israel’s leaders have asserted that they remain committed to a two-state solution, and we need to see that commitment in the actions of…the Israeli Government.”
The decision to build was pushed through as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in the final stages of confirming his new coalition. Netanyahu campaigned in the March elections on a promise of expanding construction in East Jerusalem, land Israel claims as its own but which Palestinians want as the capital of their future state.

Gush Katif Families Gather from Across Israel in Special Lag B'Omer Celebration

Gush Katif Families Gather from Across Israel in Special Lag B'Omer Celebration

“And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, who are these to you? And he said, The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” (Genesis 33:5)
There are many children who live in need throughout Israel. What is worse is that many of them don’t have to.
Among the children who are most in need are those whose families were expelled from Gush Katif in 2005. Families who were productive, self supporting and contributing members to society had everything ripped away from them by the government all in the name of a peace which never occurred and a political move that created havoc for Israel’s security for the past decade.
Today, the youngest child expelled from Gush Katif is 10-years-old. Many of these children and their families are living below the poverty line. Without a business, without credit and without a home these families were forced to scrape by and have been kept in poverty due to the decade old political move.
To help alleviate at least part of the national travesty that was the pull-out from Gush Katif, Shai Gefen from the Museum for Gush Katif, in partnership with Aryeh Weingarten from the Karmey Chesed organization, are hosting on Thursday their annual Lag B’Omer holiday celebratory event for children who were expelled from Gush Katif and their families.

The event is to take place at the Action Park in the Lachish, located just outside the southern city of Kiryat Gat. Over 3,000 children from across Israel are expected to attend the eight hour event.
“We partnered with Karmey Chesed to create a day of fun for free in which we brought former Gush Katif children, children who have been affected by the wars with Gaza, and victims of terror from all over the south, as well as the rest of Israel,” Gefen told Breaking Israel News. “It is just one small thing that we can do.”

“The children and their families deserve us to give, but they also deserve more than that. They deserve us to give with a smile. It picks them up, and fills them with self esteem. Suddenly their cares are gone for a day and they can be children and have fun,” Gefen continued.
The jam-packed day of fun includes playground activities, sports, carnival equipment to play on and a fair like atmosphere. In traditional Israeli holiday festivities, hundreds of families will spend the day gathered around their barbeques.
This isn’t the first time that Karmey Chesed and the Gush Katif Museum have teamed up. They’ve been at this for six years. “The partnership is very successful,” says Gefen, “Karmey Chesed helps us out incredibly.”
As part of the activities which the two organizations partner on, the Lag B’Omer celebration is aimed specifically at bringing joy to the lives of the children. Other activities in the past have included more family oriented goals, helping families in need pick themselves up and get a step ahead in life.
Karmey Chesed works around the clock to provide for needy families all over Israel. In past events, Karmey Chesed has handed out much-needed clothing, food, furniture and financial assistance to families in need at the event.

“Families who are in need get whatever assistance we can give them,” explained Gefen, “and they get it with a smile.”
Gefen speaks very highly of his partner organization. “Karmey Chesed is simply amazing. Every single request that we have asked for on behalf of the Gush Katif evacuees, they have answered. They have answered so many families, and so many families still need it. We have literally helped hundreds of families to provide for their children.”

“We are talking here about charity and giving of a type that is incredibly unique, you do not only help but you help hundreds of people the amount alone is simply astonishing. People who have actually nothing receive entire house loads of supplies.,” Gefen continued. “For these families it is not only important to give them what they need but to give them in a way that is above and beyond and with a smile. Karmey Chesed gives to them with caring and love. To give with love, that I think is the uniqueness of Karmey Chesed and of Aryeh Weingarten and it has proven itself over and over again.”

MY TWO-CENT WORTH.-

ISRAEL MUST RE-OCCUPY GAZA AND GIVE IT BACK TO ITS LEGITIMATE OWNERS...THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Garland Shooting: The Jihad Against Free Speech Comes to Texas

Garland Shooting: The Jihad Against Free Speech Comes to Texas

We are living in infamous times. Reality outpaces fiction, and the worst case scenarios keep unfolding in our daily headlines.
Critics of torturers and mass murderers are demonized as “extremists” and “provocateurs.” Israel is accused of human rights atrocities it has never committed by those very entities who themselves actually commit such atrocities; anyone who points this out is deemed an “extreme conservative” and a “racist.” Anti-infidel hate speech—as long as it is directed against America and Israel—is seen as protected by the First Amendment and by the doctrine of Free Speech; exposing the diabolical Big Lies is considered politically incorrect “racist” hate speech which has no place in the Western media, on campus, at the UN, or in any international human rights organization.
Either the West fights back or it surrenders to these Orwellian rules. Many Western intellectuals prefer scapegoating Israel and surrendering quietly to these diabolical Islamist rules rather than risk their reputations and their lives.
Some of us fight back. We do so in different ways. Some of us use only our pens. Others launch demonstrations and lawsuits. Some do both—and some push the envelope, looking for certain trouble, welcoming it, in order to provide an object lesson to those who will not see the Jihad that is upon us, the Jihad that only Israel once faced, the Jihad that is destroying the Middle East and the Muslim world.
Now jihad just took place in Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, in the United States of America.
Enter Pamela Geller, the blogger-activist and founder of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), Robert Spencer, the best-selling author and founder of JihadWatch, and Dutch Parliamentarian and filmmaker Geert Wilders—all long-time freedom fighters against radical, terrorist Islamism. These three have just joined the august ranks of the publisher of the original Mohammed cartoons and the International and Danish Free Press Societies, not only in terms of their having all been awarded pariah status as “Islamophobes” and “racists,” but now in terms of having “provoked” criminal gunfire.
The British and American media has identified a suspected former terrorist Elton Simpson as one of the two gunmen who shot an officer protecting the AFDI’s Mohammed Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest award ceremony yesterday. Both gunmen were shot dead and an officer was wounded. The gunmen lived in Phoenix, Arizona and was on an FBI “No-fly” list.
Shortly before the attempted attack, an account believed (though not confirmed) to belong to Simpson tweeted “May Allah accept us as mujahideen.” Another tweet, registered toAbuHussainAlBritani reads: “When will the kuffar understand and stop insulting the prophet s.a.w? learn from history & save your people! #Paris #Denmark#Texas.”
According to the Daily Mail, followers of ISIS had been “calling for an attack online for more than a week after learning about the cartoon contest.”
This event was a “defiant gesture” in support of Free Speech in the wake of the January massacre of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists—and, I would add, in the wake of the cowardice of those PEN authors who are protesting the Freedom of Expression Courage award being given to a surviving Charlie Hebdo editor and a cartoonist.
Geller wrote on her website, “This is a war. This is war on free speech. What are we going to do? Are we going to surrender to these monsters?”
Free speech and, in America, the First Amendment, were crafted to protect all free speech, including that which some people find offensive or even scurrilous. We are not all meant to like or agree with it. This concept is the fruit of centuries of Western-style evolution, something that Islam has never enjoyed.
In Islam, “blasphemy” as well as “apostasy” are viewed as capital offenses. In 1988, when Salman Rushdie published a novel that the Ayatollah Khomeini profoundly disagreed with, the Ayatollah did not write an opposing novel or critique. In 1989, he issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death and the Iranian government backed this fatwa through 2005. Rushdie lived in hiding and with police protection. One of Rushdie’s translators was murdered, bookstores were firebombed, publishers threatened.
In 2004, Dutch filmmaker, Theo Von Gogh was butchered by Moroccan-Dutch jihadist, Mohamed Bouyeri, who did not like Von Gogh’s (and Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s) filmed critique of Islam’s treatment of women.
In 2005, Flemming Rose published the original Mohammed cartoons in Jyllens-Posten, the Danish newspaper. These cartoons were relatively tame. Jihadists secretly added some more malicious cartoons to the mix—and sent it around the globe via the internet. Violent and highly choreographed riots ensued around the world. Gunmen in Gaza invaded the EU’s offices there demanding an apology.
Between 2005-2013, protests spread across the Middle East. Infidel Embassies were attacked. Charlie Hebdo republished the cartoons and reaped a whirlwind of lawsuits and attacks.
In 2008, the Danish police arrested several suspects who were plotting to kill Kurt Westergaard, the original Mohammed cartoonist.
In 2009, Yale University Press published a book about the cartoon controversy by Jytte Klausen. However, without telling the author, the Press removed the actual cartoons from her book.
In 2010, a Somali Muslim with an ax and a knife entered Westergaard’s house; luckily, Westergaard fought him off.
In 2010, American cartoonist Molly Norris proposed an “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day.” She published her own rather harmless and funny cartoon. Norris has had to live in hiding ever since. In hiding. In America.
In 2011, Charlie Hebdo’s offices were burned down in an arson attack the day after they published an issue with the prophet Mohammed as the Editor-in-Chief.
In early 2015, Jihadists massacred 12 Charlie Hebdo writers in Paris; for good measure, they murdered five Jews later the same day.
Also in 2015, in Copenhagen, a gunmen opened fire at a debate on Islam and Free Speech. One documentary filmmaker, Finn Noergaard, was shot and three police officers were injured. The shooter, Omar Abdel Hamid el-Hussein, got away and soon after murdered a security guard at a synagogue; he was then killed.
Now, Jihadists have attacked Free Speech in America. Whether or not people find Geller, Spencer and Wilders “extremely provocative troublemakers” both they and We the People are absolutely entitled under our laws to exercise our First Amendment rights. About anything.
We cannot yell “fire” in a crowded theater. Some believe that Geller et al are doing just that, causing trouble when trouble can be avoided if one only follows Islamist guidelines.
Many elitists and scholars favor  “nuance;” “sensitivity;” “anti-racism,” “inter-faith dialogue.” But they should favor freedom more and double standards less. Westerners have absolutely no trouble criticizing Christianity and Judaism. Why so much angst about criticizing one religion only: Islam?  If what Geller, Spencer, and Wilders have just done advances the cause of freedom of speech, we may not all have to follow their tactics, but we should at least acknowledge that we support their goals.
If not, what exactly are our alternatives?

Israel okays 900 East Jerusalem homes, peace group says

Israel okays 900 East Jerusalem homes, peace group says
District planning committee said to authorize project in ultra-Orthodox neighborhood
Israel has approved construction of 900 homes in East Jerusalem, a watchdog group said Thursday, shortly after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially formed a new coalition.
The new homes will be built in the predominantly ultra-Orthodox East Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, following a decision late Wednesday by the city’s district planning committee, Peace Now spokeswoman Hagit Ofran told AFP.  “They’ve approved the request, and now they’re allowed to build,” she said.
However, an Interior Ministry ministry spokesperson downplayed the significance of the committee decision, telling The Times of Israel that it was a technicality concerned with the stages of development of the project that had been previously limited to 500 units until an access road junction was completed. Following the decision, the limit was raised to 900.
“These are not new apartments,” the ministry spokesperson said, “it is a project that was approved years ago.”
In March 2010, the interior ministry announced a plan to build 1,600 homes in Ramat Shlomo. The announcement came as US Vice President Joe Biden was visiting Israel, provoking fierce American opposition and souring relations with Washington for months.  In November 2013, the plan passed a further stage of approval but construction was held up because the planning committee said new roads must be built first, Peace Now said.  “The plan [for 900 units] has been approved even though they don’t have the roads,” Ofran said.
Israel effectively annexed East Jerusalem after capturing it in 1967 and says it retains the right to build in any part of the capital, though housing announcements often draw international and Palestinian condemnations.
In early October, Washington leveled especially harsh criticism at Jerusalem for a plan to develop a new neighborhood in the area of Givat Hamatos on the southern end of the city, saying the East Jerusalem construction would “poison the atmosphere” and distance Israel “from even its closest allies.”
US President Barack Obama’s administration has had a cold relationship with Netanyahu, notably over continued construction over the Green Line, a move which the international community views as a major obstacle to peace with the Palestinians.
In his reelection campaign in March, Netanyahu vowed to step up construction in East Jerusalem.  The move was authorized as Netanyahu was in the final stages of piecing together a coalition government that will include the right-wing Jewish Home, which strongly backs settlement construction and opposes a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu and Bennett Sign on the Dotted Line

Netanyahu and Bennett Sign on the Dotted Line

Bayit Yehudi will bear full responsibility for settlements. Herzog insists he will remain in the Opposition.      By:       Published: May 7th, 2015

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home) chairman Naftali Bennett finally signed a coalition agreement Thursdays morning, and the new government will take office next week.  Opposition leader Yitzchak Herzog vehemently denied all reports that he and Prime Minister Netanyahu will form a national unity government in the future. The rumors multiplied this week with the post of Foreign Minister still in the hands of the Prime Minister.
Thursday morning’s signature by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Bennett was a birthday gift for Bayit Yehudi Knesset Member Ayelet Shaked, who is 39 years old today. She will be the new Justice Minister, despite having only having two years of experience in politics. She also will chair the important Cabinet committee for legislation.  Uri Ariel, a senior Bayit Yehudi MK and Housing Minister in the previous government, will become Agriculture Minister along with responsibility for the Settlement Division.
The Shaked-Ariel combo is poison to the left and the Obama administration. Shaked will have authority to approve legal construction in Judea and Samaria, where Ariel encourages construction.
In addition, a Bayit Yehudi Knesset Member – apparently Bennett – will be Deputy Defense Minister with responsibility for the Civil Administration.
The deal puts all the cards for Judea and Samaria in the hands of the Bayit Yehudi except for the Defense Ministry, where Moshe Ya’alon will remain at the helm and is the final authority for approving new homes for Jews.  Bennett will be Minister of Education, and Netanyahu has promised that more money will be budgeted for Ariel University, located in Samaria.
With Shas, Yehadut HaTorah and Kulanu, Prime Minister Netanyahu has a majority of only one.  The thinnest possible coalition majority is a two-edged sword. Any party can threaten Netanyahu to give in to its demands if he wants to remain in power but also will be very careful not blow up the government.
The new government also will see Shas, which heads the Religious Affairs Ministry, trying to see how it can push Bayit Yehudi.

OF SIRENS AND ROCKETS...

Sunday, May 3, 2015

How much time is your life worth?

Well, I just saw a sign that the Israeli army has released...it seems I've lost a minute and a half and I have to tell you, I'm not happy about that. I really needed that minute and a half. It's the difference between panic and concern and, God forbid, for someone, it could be the difference between life and death.

The last map showed that my home was in the 3 minute zone. My knee has been bothering me...yeah, I'm getting old. It cracks sometimes when I get up and it needs a few steps to sort of get unstuck when I've been sitting too long at the puzzle on the table.

I'm sure it's temporary and my knees will come back to normal...but at my age...it might be something else. I'm luckier than many...my bomb shelter is not that far away - just down the hall, and because of where my home was built, the lower part is very protected because the original owners had to dig down into the bedrock to chisel away room for the building.

But a minute and a half? What if the kids are upstairs with earphones on and they don't hear a siren and I have to run upstairs?

What if...

What if...

And the silly, absurd part is that's me, way on the right center of the map in the light green, not even the lime green, or yellow, or orange, or red, or worst of all the dark maroon.

Dark maroon has the ominous title "immediately" - but they don't mean immediately get up and go to the bomb shelter, they mean, be in it NOW. You have no time at all...it's like what happened to one family living near there - a family with three children...only now they have two because the two parents each grabbed one of the youngest children, one just a baby...and called to the four year old to run.

And usually he was the first one there...he knew already at the young age of four that he had to run as soon as he heard the siren...only that time, he didn't make it.

Red - well, they have 15 seconds...I have several friends in that area...but one just had a heart attack...she shouldn't be running!

Orange is 30 seconds...still too short. Impossible. What do they want from us?

So I can't complain that I've got a minute and a half...even though it's a minute and a half less than I had before.

How much time is my life worth...your life...the lives of your children and everyone you love? It's right there on the map...not because that's what it's worth...just because that's all they're going to give us.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved an Arab-backed resolution Tuesday calling on Israel to renounce possession of nuclear weapons and put its nuclear facilities under international oversight.

Screen Shot 2014-12-03 at 3.41.05 PM
The resolution, adopted in a 161-5 vote, noted that Israel is the only Middle Eastern country that is not party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It called on Israel to “accede to that treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons, to renounce possession of nuclear weapons” and put its nuclear facilities under the safeguard of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency.
The United States, Canada, Palau and Micronesia joined Israel in opposing the measure, while 18 countries abstained.
Israel is widely considered to possess nuclear arms but declines to confirm it.
The resolution, introduced by Egypt, echoed a similar Arab-backed effort that failed to gain approval in September at the Vienna-based IAEA. At the time, Israel criticized Arab countries for undermining dialogue by repeatedly singling out the Jewish state in international arenas. Israel’s U.N. Mission did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday.
The U.N. resolution, titled “The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East,” pushed for the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East and lamented that U.S.-backed efforts to convene talks were abandoned in 2012.
Israel has long argued that a full Palestinian-Israeli peace plan must precede any creation of a Mideast zone free of weapons of mass destruction. The country also argues that Iran’s alleged work on nuclear arms is the real regional threat. Iran denies pursuing such weapons.
General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but carry moral weight because it is the only body where all 193 U.N. member states are represented.

PAMELA GELLER TESTED THE FIRST AMENDMENT AND AMERICA FAILED

“Pamela Geller’s War On Radical Islam And Everybody Else”, By Jack Engelhard, Israel National News, May 5, 2015
Pamela Geller tested the First Amendment and America failed.
Have you hugged a Jihadist today? Everybody else has. Have you trashed Pamela Geller this morning? Welcome to the club.
Pamela Geller Free speech
Pamela Geller made a mistake. She tested the First Amendment and the First Amendment lost.
This fighter for Israel, this battler against Radical Islam can seem to find no friends after what she did. She tried to prove that America is not France, where 11 were murdered by Islamists for printing Mohammad cartoons, nor are we the Netherlands, where Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s partner, Director Theo van Gogh was murdered for his documentary Submission, which exposed Islamist mistreatment of women. This cannot happen in America, assumed Miss Geller, here in the land of the free, home of the brave, and she was wrong.  It can happen here, and it did…in part.
WINNING POSTER
Together with Robert Spencer, Geller organized a Mohammad Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas; obviously as a means to illustrate that America will not be intimidated. Two apparent Jihadists (with possible links to ISIS) tried to storm the event, but were killed by local police. After that came the denunciations. No, not against the Islamic fanatics. But against Geller.  From all across the Liberal dials, plus The New York Times, came blasts of outrage against Geller for being “provocative” and “asking for trouble.”  But Conservatives? They too piled on. Donald Trump, Bill O’Reilly, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, Don Imus – all those and others want her scalp.  Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum was especially harsh during this morning’s interview with Geller.  Better, they allege, if Geller would hush up and forget the First Amendment. Safer, they suggest, if we submit and become a nation of wimps.
There was a time, among journalists especially, when Americans were unafraid and quick to speak their minds.  Imus, legendary as a shock jock and as a man who fearlessly speaks his mind, was astonishingly disapproving of Geller, and fearful.  “When you inflame people,” he said, “what else can you expect?”  Well, Don, you can expect a touch of support for a woman who champions free speech.  Besides, how can you inflame people, these Jihadists, who are always on fire anyway?

SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME
Robert Spencer writes bestsellers and runs the Jihad Watch website to reveal outrages committed in the name of Islam. Ditto Geller who refuses to be stopped in support of Israel and in exposing the encroachment of Islamic Extremism. They are brave. Are they the last of the brave?  Read this.  There was a time, among journalists especially, when Americans were unafraid and quick to speak their minds. We saw this from last week’s PBS program about Vietnam, which featured reporters going after LBJ and Nixon with a vengeance. Compare that to today’s reporters who remain putty in the hands of Obama.  Seems that we have trained ourselves to be compliant, passive, easily cowed and entirely too close to being cowards.  If freedom of speech is not worth fighting for – what will we give up next?

WHEN A PRESIDENT'S HERO IS A TERRORIST

A Tale of Two Societies: When a President’s Hero is a Terrorist

The president of a normal, civilized country naturally is anxious to distance himself from any suspicion of ever having had a connection to a terrorist. That’s how President Barack Obama reacted when the Bill Ayers controversy erupted. But the recent decision by the Palestinian Authority’s president to give awards to three Arab terrorists reminded us that some governments are neither normal nor civilized.   Ayers, the co-founder of the 1960s Weather Underground terrorist group, was involved in planting bombs at New York City police headquarters, the United States Capitol building, and the Pentagon in 1970-1972. It was just by pure chance that nobody was injured in those attacks, which caused extensive damage.
During the 2008 presidential campaign, journalists revealed that Ayers had hosted, in his home, the first-ever fundraiser for Obama, then a candidate for the Illinois state senate. Obama quickly distanced himself from Ayers, whom he described as “just some guy in our neighborhood.” Ayers subsequently said that he never had any contact with Obama, either during the campaign or after his election as president.  Whatever the details of the Ayers-Obama connection, candidate Obama wanted to make it crystal clear that he had no admiration for Ayers’s views or deeds, and did not want to be associated with a terrorist in any way. In American society, terrorism is regarded as evil and a connection with a terrorist spells the end of any politician’s career.  Not so in Palestinian society. There even the most heinous terrorists are considered heroes, and the president rushes to heap honors upon the killers and their families.
Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas celebrated “Palestinian Prisoners Day” on April 17 by bestowing medals upon three notorious terrorists—the first female and male Fatah terrorists jailed by Israel, and the first Fatah terrorist killed while trying to murder Israelis. Abbas is also chairman of Fatah, which is the largest faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization.  The first female Fatah terrorist captured by the Israelis was Fatima Bernawi. In October 1967, Bernawi placed a bomb in the Zion Cinema in Jerusalem. Note, by the way, that the attack did not take place in “occupied territory,” except in the sense that Fatah considers even pre-1967 Israel to be “occupied Palestine.”
By sheer chance, the bomb did not explode. Bernawi was captured and sentenced to life in prison for attempted mass murder. Unfortunately, she was released after 10 years as a “gesture” in honor of the visit to Israel of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. That was a terrible mistake by the Israelis. It helped create an expectation about releasing terrorists when, in fact, Israel should have always maintained that Arab leaders who are against terrorism surely would not want terrorists to be set free.  Shortly after the establishment of the PA in 1994, Bernawi was rewarded with the position of chief of the women’s section of the PA police. That, too, was an outrage. The PA should have been told in no uncertain terms, by both Israel and the U.S., that no terrorists should be rewarded with government jobs. Such rewards send a message that terrorists are heroes and should be emulated—exactly the wrong message to send to young Palestinians.
The fact that the U.S. helped train the PA police makes the situation even more outrageous. American government personnel were training a convicted bomber. Imagine if Bill Ayers were to apply for a position in his local police department. Would anyone in his right mind say he should be hired?  Bernawi, like Ayers, never expressed any regret for her terrorism. To this day, she regards planting a bomb in a movie theater as an act of heroism.   Fatah’s official web site, announcing Abbas’s decision to present Bernawi with a medal, hailed her as “one of the first Palestinian women to adopt armed self-sacrifice operations after the start of the modern Palestinian revolution.” (Translation courtesy of the Middle East Media and Research Institute.)
So there you have it. An American president who distances himself from a terrorist, and an American society that utterly rejects terrorism. A Palestinian president who embraces terrorists, and a Palestinian society that treats mass murderers as heroes.  Two societies, two different sets of values, two different ways of life. Perhaps there is nothing Americans can do to change the PA. But why must $500 million in U.S. aid continue to be sent to the PA each year? American taxpayers would not want to subsidize Bill Ayers; so, why is their money being used to subsidize Fatima Bernawi?
