That they may fear You all the
days that they live in the land which You gave to our fathers.
I KINGS (8:40)
Shabbat Inspiration
Today's verse is part of King
Solomon's address to the people when he brings up the altar to the Temple in
Jerusalem. Solomon reiterates the
unbreakable connection between the lives we lead as followers of God and the
original covenant God made with our forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Solomon reinforces how the traditions passed
down through the generations are immutable.
Pirkei Avot or "Ethics of Our Fathers", captures the most
famous sayings passed down from the time of Moses; this is one of the
best-known Jewish texts worldwide which reveals how the early Jewish fathers
applied the newly written Torah to their lives, advice that Jews still widely
use today.
IN THIS AND IN MANY MORE SHABBATS, THE FAMILIES OF EYAL, GILAD AND NAFTALI WILL HAVE AN EMPTY CHAIR AT THEIR TABLE
BECAUSE THEIR CHILDREN WERE TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM, NEVER TO RETURN...
