UPDATE — 12 Killed in Paris Terror Attack, 3 Islamic Gunmen on the loose

Twelve people have been killed and 10 – 15 people wounded, 5 of whom seriously wounded (4 critically) in a terrorist attack in the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satire magazine on boulevard Richard-Lenoir in Paris (Paris XI).  The terrorists entered the office and asked for specific victims by name. Reports indicate the terrorists were well trained and professionals. Two policemen have been killed among the 11.  Three gunman committed the terror attack, shooting Kalashnikov rifles. They swapped cars during their escape.  Witnesses say they heard the shooters say, “We’ve avenged

the honor of the prophet!” according to Sky News. According to Le Figaro, the gunman are on the run after a shootout with policemen. A pedestrian has been injured by the terrorist’s vehicle, and there has been a second shootout, according to Le Figaro.  Paris is now at the highest alert level.  The magazine has published anti-ISIS and Prophet Mohammed cartoons in the past.  

The following is the most recent cartoon tweeted by Charlie Hebdo.  12 people, including two policemen, were killed and four others - some of them in uniform - were very seriously injured in the shoot-out at the offices of the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” in Paris, France.  Ten others were injured to varying degrees. The gunmen used grenades and fired guns while shouting: “We avenge Allah." President Francois Hollande reached the scene of the crime.  “We will find the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Hollande said. “This is a shock for the residents of France and we have no doubt that this was a terrorist attack. At this time, we need to be united because this is a very difficult moment. Our hearts are with the victims' families.” Following the terror attack, Paris raised the alert level to the highest level and there is a search effort for the shooters.  Claire Murphy, from the France 24 network, reported from the scene of the terror attack and said: "There are two rescue vehicles, policemen, and firefighters. There is a feeling of absolute shock. It's unbelievable. The terrorists apparently ran away.”  Benoit Bringer, a journalist who witnessed the terror attack, told a French TV network that he saw "two hooded men armed with Kalashnikovs."  

The magazine caused a major uproar two years ago, following a cartoon that was published, which ridiculed the Prophet Mohammed. A year later, they published a comic about the Prophet’s life in a sarcastic tone. The editor of the magazine was quick to defend himself and explained that the illustrations were published based on research that was done by a Tunisian born French sociologist who researched the history of the founder of Islam.  At the same time, the magazine confirmed that the edition would have several illustrations of the Prophet Mohammed. The editor, who in the past was an illustrator himself, said “the illustrations would shock those who want to be shocked.” The magazine’s decision to publish the illustrations came during a time when a wave of violent riots erupted because of a video on Youtube, which mocked Islam and the Prophet Mohammed. The films' director was a Coptic Christian who lives in the United States.

French police document names 3 suspects sought in Paris shooting manhunt and were hunting three French nationals, including two brothers from the Paris region, after suspected Islamist gunmen killed 12 people at a satirical magazine on Wednesday, a police official and government source said.

Police issued a document to forces across the region saying the three men were being sought for murder in relation to the Charlie Hebdo attack. The document, reviewed by a Reuters correspondent, named them as Said Kouachi, born in 1980, Cherif Kouachi, born in 1982, and Hamyd Mourad, born in 1996.
