Last night (Monday), State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki addressed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly, criticizing some of his statements. "Obviously, we've designated both as terrorist organizations, but ISIS poses a different threat to Western interests and to the United States," said Psaki about the comparison Netanyahu made between the organizations, and his call out to the world to fight them both.
"We do not believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu, or anyone else in Israel is suggesting that the United States launch a military campaign against Hamas. They are both terrorist organizations under the United States designations, but certainly we see differences - in terms of the threat and otherwise", stressed Psaki. The spokeswoman was also asked about the generalization made by the Prime Minister in reference to Sunni and Shia organizations, as those striving to create radical Islamic enclaves. "We do not agree with that definition", said Psaki, regarding that statement as well.
In his speech, the Prime Minister called Iran's moves "a charm offensive" and called out not to fall for it. "I can assure anyone that an agreement reached would not be based on a 'charm offensive' or how that impacts us, but on the facts and the details", said the State Department spokeswoman in response, stating that talks with Iran are important as an initial step towards integration into the western community.
Even Netanyahu's definition of the UN Humans Rights Council as a "Terrorists'
Rights Council" didn't get any sympathy at the State Department. "We would not agree with that, we have obviously voiced concerns when we have them about actions that are taken, but no we would certainly not agree with that characterization", she stressed. "We've expressed concerns in the past, but we don't see the need for heated rhetoric".

The spokeswoman also emphasized the efforts made by the United States with regard to nuclear Iran, but even here, drew a line between that and the threat posed by ISIS. "Both are major threats. We spent a lot of time and energy because we are concerned, as Israel, by Iran acquiring nuclear weapons", stated Psaki. "We are also concerned by the ISIS threat, that's why we are putting in all this effort".
