War proves kibbutzim still matter
When it comes to self-sacrifice and mutual aid, Israel's kibbutzim assume a leadership role Only 2 percent of Israelis live on kibbutzim, but their contribution to Israel's war effort has been disproportionate, according to an article in Ha'aretz on Wednesday. Seven soldiers, more than 13 percent of the casualties, are from these communal villages, and kibbutzim have also led the way in providing hospitality to combat soldiers and displaced civilians during Israel's Operation Protective Edge. Kibbutzim have spearheaded many mutual aid efforts during the war. (PIC-KIBBUTZ KETURA)
Kibbutzim, which epitomized the pioneering spirit of the country's founders, are also on the front lines, because most of them are located along the country's borders. Kibbutzim along the border with Gaza have been infiltrated by terrorists emerging from tunnels three times since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge. During the 1980's, many kibbutzim came close to bankruptcy, forcing many of them to privatize. Critics said that the old ideology was dead, but, argues Judy Maltz in Ha'aretz. this was due to economic necessity more than ideology. (PIC.-KIBBUTZ EIN GEDI)
Today there are 274 kibbutzim in Israel. Seventeen are religious kibbutzim, 60 are old-school socialist kibbutzim and the rest are privatized, less collectivist, but still highly communal. In recent years there has been a rise in kibbutz membership, stemming from the desire of young people for a sense of community and a life in the countryside. Kibbutzim tend to align themselves with the Meretz and Labor parties. Almost all of them support this war, however, Alon Pauker, a historian of the kibbutz movement, told Ha'aretz. “Almost all the members of the kibbutzim believe that this is not a war of choice because they see themselves under an existential threat today.” (PIC.-KIBBUTZ LAVI)
ANOTHER "HUMANITARIAN" CEASE FIRE
Kerry, Ban Ki-moon announce three day humanitarian truce, spokesman says Hamas agrees to the ceasefire commencing at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. NITED NATIONS/NEW DELHI - Israel and Islamist militant group Hamas have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire in their conflict in the Gaza Strip starting on Friday, US Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday. The ceasefire will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 1, they said in a joint statement.
The statement said "forces on the ground will remain in place" during the truce, implying that Israeli ground forces will not withdraw. Hamas said it would abide by a three-day mutual ceasefire with Israel to begin early on Friday. "Acknowledging a call by the United Nations and in consideration of the situation of our people, resistance factions agreed to a 72-hour humanitarian and mutual calm that begins at 8 a.m on Friday as long as the other side abides by it," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said. "All the Palestinian factions are united behind the issue in this regard," Abu Zuhri said.
ANOTHER "HUMANITARIAN" CEASE FIRE MEANS HAMAS WILL HAVE MORE TIME TO STOCK-STACK UP WITH ROCKETS....
Hamas Attack on Rosh Hashanah Planned Through Gaza Terror Tunnels
As we reported in today’s Daily Dispatch, Hamas has spent many years, hundreds of thousands of tons of concrete, and millions of dollars building its extensive system of terror tunnels. Now, Israeli security sources are saying that the IDF’s discovery of some of the tunnels has thwarted a large terror attack Hamas had planned for Rosh Hashanah:
Hamas had apparently been preparing a murderous assault on Israeli civilian targets for the coming Jewish New Year Holiday, Rosh Hashanah, which begins on September 24, according anonymous sources in the Israeli security services, as reported today by the Israeli daily Maariv.
The Hamas plan consisted of what was to be a surprise attack in which 200 fighters would be dispatched through each of dozens of tunnels dug by Hamas under the border from Gaza to Israel, and seize kibbutzim and other communities while killing and kidnapping Israeli civilians. Israeli soldiers already frustrated a surprise assault by Hamas through one tunnel from Gaza into the Eshkol district of Israel on July 19. The Hamas fighters escaped back into the tunnel, but the clash cost the lives of two Israel Defense Force [IDF] troops.

CHRISTIANS UNITED FOR-WITH ISRAEL
Five Fellowship-Adopted Battalions Serving in Gaza \ IFCJ \
Operation Protective Edge \ The Fellowship \ IDF
Israelis have to endure terror raining down from the sky in the form of rockets – and fear it coming out of the ground as well. But as the IDF works to eradicate Hamas' terror tunnels, Israel's people stand strong and united, along with their friends and supporters around the world. The Fellowship has adopted 11 battalions in Israel, providing the soldiers at these bases with activities, holiday celebrations, and recreational supplies, as well as discretionary funds for commanders to help lone soldiers (those with no family in the country) or soldiers with needy families.
Five of these battalions The Fellowship has adopted are now serving in or near Gaza, playing a key role in Operation Protective Edge. The Lavie, Nachshon, and Shimshon Battalions are deployed in the West Bank, conducting counter-terrorism operations, apprehending Palestinian terrorists, and performing other security activities. The Gaza Division Southern Brigade is serving in southern Israel near the Gaza border and enters the Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks from Hamas in Gaza. And the Israel Navy Base located in the Port of Ashdod protects the state of Israel from infiltrations by sea.
The Fellowship has also temporarily adopted 31 more battalions pending adoption by other organizations, and 14 of those include soldiers who are involved in the fighting in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge. Please pray for the safety of these brave Israeli soldiers, as well as the others who might not be on the front lines but who are still instrumental in keeping the Holy Land safe. May God protect them mightily and use them to restore peace to the region.
In the words of Bibi… At the dedication of the restoration of a historic windmill in Jerusalem last week, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke to the important role Christians have played in the success of the Jewish state: “I don’t believe that the Jewish State and Modern Zionism would have been possible without Christian Zionism. We value our friends, and we never forget them, and we think that you have helped establish here a powerful memorial to our friendship and our common ideals.”
Just another reason we appreciate Netanyahu!
UNRWA...TO THE RESCUE...of hamas
UPDATE: Despite the report on both Channel 1 and from an IDF source, the JewishPress.com has been informed by a knowledgeable source that the booby-trapped building was in fact a former Red Cross clinic, and not an active UNRWA clinic as previously claimed. Our source informs us that while the building is not registered as a UNRWA facility, the IDF soldiers saw an UNRWA sign on the building identifying it as such, which raises the question, why was an UNRWA sign on a Hamas booby-trapped building. Three IDF soldiers died and 15 others were wounded Wednesday morning trying to safeguard an UNRWA clinic while destroying a terror tunnel in Gaza.
The only problem was that the clinic, which belonged to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) itself was the terror trap — a fact first reported by Amir Ben-Shalom of Israel’s Channel 1 television — and the tunnel was inside the clinic. Three UNRWA schools have been found housing rockets. In one school, UNRWA officials handed over the rockets to Hamas, and in the second school the rockets ‘disappeared’ (probably somewhere over Israel). UNRWA officials allegedly did not tell an angry United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon where the collection of ordnance went. The thing to consider is this - you can’t exactly dig out a tunnel, with its entrance inside a building without the people in the building noticing. Three UNRWA schools storing rockets. A UNRWA medical clinic with a bomb-laden terror tunnel.
The United Nations has some serious answering to do.

THE BALLS....METAL BALLS FOR HUMANITARIAN AID ????
Jul 31, 2014, 09:30AM | Dana Nasi
A Turkish humanitarian shipment of supplies to Gaza included metal balls among bags of flour and a cement mixer among concrete. It remains unclear what was the purpose of the shipment that passed through a security check. Customs officials at the Ashdod Port were surprised to discover that a Turkish humanitarian shipment to Gaza included hundreds of metal balls and a cement mixer. The content of the shipment aroused the suspicion of the workers and the equipment underwent a security check. According to the Turks, the metal balls were part of equipment intended to be used for humanitarian purposes and not for hostile activities against Israel. However, in previous cases, the terrorist organizations used similar metal balls for explosive devices and warheads in order to increase the damage from explosions, which is what triggered the suspicion of the customs officials. Earlier this week, it was reported that Turkey was attempting to break the naval blockade on Gaza, as part of a flotilla similar to the Mavi Marmara in 2010. According to flotilla organizations, the ship has not yet departed and will include humanitarian aid, food and medicine to help the Palestinians in Gaza.

PEACE AND QUIET IN ISRAEL - PEACE AND QUIET IN GAZA
Jul 31, 2014, 10:00AM | Rachel Avraham | 4 AV, 5774 - On the 24th day of Operation Protective Edge, IDF forces exchange fire with Islamic Jihad terrorists in a Palestinian refugee camp in Central Gaza. The IDF is expected to expand the area of operation in order to locate tunnels. An additional 16,000 soldiers were drafted into the IDF today. As Operation Protective Edge enters its 24th day, IDF forces continue efforts to locate and destroy tunnels. This morning, an exchange of fire took place between Israeli forces and Islamic Jihad terrorists in the El Marazi and Al Bureij Refugee Camps in Central Gaza.
A senior level military source appraised that the strikes on terrorists in Gaza are significant and that until now, a thousand terrorists were killed in the operation. According to the decision taken, the IDF will recruit today an additional 16,000 reservists in order to refresh the forces mobilized since the beginning of the operation. The new recruits will be directed to replace the forces in various sectors and most of them will enter the territory of Gaza. Since the beginning of the operation, 70,000 reservists have been recruited and now the number will reach 86,000.
During the night, a number of terrorists were killed during clashes in Gaza, more than 20 terror targets were attacked, and a number of new tunnels were discovered. The IDF during the coming day is expected to expand the operation, in order to locate more tunnels. A senior level military source noted that the level of intelligence continues to increase in the field.
This morning, the rocket fire on Southern Israel continues, as the sirens were sounded in Be’ersheva, Ashdod, Be’er Tuvia, and the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council. One of the rockets hit a dairy barn on a moshav in Be’er Tuvia. No one was injured but great damage was caused to the building. During the night, the rocket attacks were lessoned, as only one rocket was fired at Eshkol, exploding in an open area without causing damage or injuries.

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF A TUNNEL
A few days after leaving office, former Israeli President Shimon Peres visited wounded soldiers in Soroka Hospital in Be’ersheva. Peres praised the fighters for their bravery in battle and expressed hope that the war will end within days. I think that the war has exhausted itself. Now, we need to find a way to stop it,” Peres stated today. He stressed that the fighting might take more time because there is no real government in Gaza and no real army. “Everyone speaks of this depression to one another and in a different voice. I hope that in the end of the day there will be another side to come to a conclusion. That would be the greatest victory, to finish it politically with peace.” “I think that this is one of the most exciting visits that I have ever had because it’s a true story about the heroism of individual soldiers,” the former Israeli President stated. “This is the army’s war against terrorism, a war of heroes against uninhibited wicked people that don’t spare their own people.”
During the long moments where Peres passed from room to room in the hospital, he spoke with the soldiers and heard from them stories of the fiercest battles against Hamas terrorists. “The soldiers entered very much into hell for every footstep can be on a mine, every house could be booby-trapped, and every corner could be an ambush,” Peres related. “They walked without hesitation or complaint. These are amazing stories of heroism.” The former Israeli President also related to the purpose of Operation Protective Edge, removing the threat of the terror tunnels, many of which lead into Israel and have been used for terrorist infiltration during the war, causing the deaths of Israeli soldiers. “This is an unprecedented war, both in terms of the nature of the battlefield and in terms of the tricks used such as the tunnels. We’re lucky that we managed to find a response to the missile technology. I believe that we can also find a technological solution to the tunnels.” Peres added that the legitimacy to rule Gaza still belongs to Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen and that we need to find a way to return it to him: “Gaza was stolen from him. We also have the support of Egypt and the Arab world. We need to return the government in Gaza to Abu Mazen.”
HAMAS VS GAZANS
Many in Israel repeatedly claim vehemently that those responsible for the suffering of Gaza civilians are Hamas members, and not the IDF soldiers attacking Gaza now. One incident that occurred in the city is further proof of this claim: Hamas police killed starving Palestinian civilians and wounded dozens of others to stop a violent conflict that erupted in a food distribution facility. Gaza is a pressure cooker at high temperature especially these days. One incident that occurred there yesterday (Monday) is one small example of this: Hamas police killed two hungry civilians and wounded dozens more. It occurred in the town of Beit Hanoun. A large group of residents huddled in a food distribution facility, government food stamps in hand. Because of their famine and the shortage of food, a debate started among the citizens. The debate quickly degenerated into a violent confrontation, weapons were drawn and civilians began to fire. Hamas police officers rushed to reach the place of the shots and sounds of the debate.
In an attempt to restore calm the organization members also drew weapons and pointed them at the citizens. Two residents of Beit Hanoun were killed this incident, and dozens more were wounded. Hamas has executed scores of Gazan civilians over the past few days, according to several separate reports. Yisrael Hayom quotes Arab news sources that report that Hamas has executed some 30 Gazan civilians for allegedly collaborating with Israel. Human rights groups report that some were executed after being caught ‘red handed’ while marking targets for the Israeli Air Force. All the alleged collaborates were summarily executed without trial. A separate report by several new sources describes protesters in Beit Hanun who were shot in the street by Hamas on Sunday for demonstrating against Hamas’ leadership and the destruction caused to the Gaza Strip. They blamed Hamas for the calamity which has befallen the civilians of the Gaza Strip. Some 20 protesters were rounded up and shot in front of a crowd. Hamas has previously been harshly condemned by the international community after being accused by local Gazans of summary executions of alleged collaborators who were shot on the basis of mere rumors or who confessed after being horribly tortured and were shot.
Third Set of Rockets Found in UNRWA School
July 29th, 2014. UNRWA has found a third set of rockets in a one of their schools, according to Channel 2′s Ehud Yaari.
We’re sure they’re shocked. UNRWA returned the first set of rockets to the local authorities (Hamas) and reappeared over Israel. The second set of rockets disappeared (presumably to somewhere over Israel). We’re now waiting to see what happens with this latest set of rockets. Israel has ample evidence that Hamas is using UNRWA schools and facilities for terrorist purposes, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzahi Hanegbi said Wednesday. Speaking at a press briefing in Jerusalem, he pointed out that on three separate occasions UNRWA itself has admitted that rockets were hidden in the basement of their facilities. “Who knows how many were not found,” he said, adding that this phenomenon was “totally unacceptable.” Each time that the rockets were found, he said, they were given back to Hamas and have probably already been fired at Israel, “endangering and jeopardizing Israeli lives.” “Instead of blaming and condemning Israel, UNRWA should make a real effort to stop being manipulated and used by the terrorist organizations.” While saying that over a span of decades UNRWA “has done a great job helping the Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip,” especially giving “blessed refuge for people leaving combat areas to save themselves,” the organization has failed to prevent its facilities from being used as terror headquarters and a hiding place for rockets. Health officials in Gaza said Wednesday that Israeli shelling killed at least 15 Palestinians sheltering in a UNRWA school in Gaza's biggest refugee camp on Wednesday. Some 3,300 Palestinians, including many women and children, were taking refuge in the building in Jabalya refugee camp when it came under fire around dawn, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said. "Our initial assessment is that it was Israeli artillery that hit our school," UNRWA chief Pierre Krahenbuhl said in a statement after representatives of the agency visited the scene and examined fragments, craters and other damage. An IDF spokeswoman said militants had fired mortar bombs from the vicinity of the school and troops shot back in response. The incident was still being reviewed.
UNRWA: The Damage Done
In three separate incidents since the start of Operation Protective Edge, schools in Gaza being run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) were found to be stashing rockets – the very same rockets the IDF is trying to locate and destroy. In at least one of these cases, UNRWA returned the rockets they discovered to “local authorities” – Hamas – undoubtedly used them to launch attacks against Israeli civilians instead of handing them over to the Israeli army.
UNRWA was established in 1949 to provide various services to more than half a million Palestinian refugees after Israel’s War of Independence in 1948. But many people argue that UNRWA is fundamentally flawed, and has only exacerbated the issue of Palestinian refugees, who today number over five million.
The status and future placement of Palestinian refugees is one of the fundamental obstacles to peace between Israel and its neighbors. And while the Palestinian Authority and Hamas continue to call for the return of all refugees to their original neighborhoods within Israel proper – a scenario which would effectively bring an end to the Jewish state – it is UNRWA that has kept this fantasy alive.
All refugees across the globe – with the exception of Palestinian refugees – are tended to by the U.N. High Commission. This commission operates under guidelines established in 1951 and seeks to settle refugees as quickly as possible, and most frequently, in countries other than the ones from which they fled. UNRWA, whose only patrons are the Palestinians, states that those Palestinians who fled Israel in the course of the 1948 War, as well as their descendants, will retain refugee status so long as they do not return to the homes and villages from which they fled – villages and homes that no longer exist.
With over 30,000 personnel, many of whom are proud members of Hamas, UNRWA is the largest U.N. agency, and the only U.N. program dedicated to serving only one group of people – the Palestinians – in one specific region.
The educational services provided by UNRWA perpetuate the conflict against Israel by demonizing and delegitimizing the Jewish state in textbooks. UNRWA-run schools and summer camps promote an ideology calling for continued armed struggle against Israel until “all of Palestine” is liberated – Tel-Aviv and Haifa included. It has funded and facilitated summer camps for tens of thousands of Palestinian children that offer military training, and has indoctrinated these children to hate all Jews by presenting speeches from Hamas leaders and glorifying suicide bombers.
Considering that half of UNRWA’s multimillion dollar annual budget funds educational programs, this is a flagrant abuse of the donations it receives from the U.S. and the E.U. UNRWA supports and disseminates the most extreme and radicalized views found in Palestinian society. The damage they have done and continue to do to the possibility of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is immeasurable, and yet the West continues to blindly fund them.
It’s no surprise that this U.N. program returns rockets found on their school premises to terrorists. What is shocking, however, is the continued U.S. and E.U. funding of such a major obstacle to peace and stability in the region.

A LITTLE HUMOR...AMIDST
Palestinian health officials in the Gaza Strip reported early Wednesday that 20 people were killed when a school operated by UNRWA in the Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip was shelled by the IDF, media reports indicated. The school served as a humanitarian shelter for many displaced Palestinians in Gaza. The IDF has so far been unable to confirm the claim, and the matter is currently under investigation. The incident came hours after UNRWA reported that for the third time in two weeks, it found that weapons had been stored in one of its Gaza schools. It called a United Nations munition exporter to dispose of the rockets and make the school safe, according to its spokesman Chris Gunness.
Fighting in Gaza made it impossible for the munition experts to access the site, Gunness said.
He condemned those who put civilian lives at risk by placing the rockets in a school run by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees whose facilities are neutral places that are not involved in the fighting. UNRWA runs more than 200 schools in Gaza and this month its facilities have housed Gazans who fled their homes to escape the Israeli aerial attacks. "We condemn the group or groups who endangered civilians by placing these munitions in our school. This is yet another flagrant violation of the neutrality of our premises. We call on all the warring parties to respect the inviolability of UN property," Gunness said in a statement. But he did not name any groups in his statement nor did he hold Hamas accountable for the incident. In the past, Israel has charged that terrorists in Gaza make use of UNRWA facilities. UNRWA has denied all such charges, and said until the two weeks ago, it had never found weapons in its buildings.
Now that it has discovered weapons in its facilities it has struggled with the question of how to dispose of them in the midst of a war in Gaza, which is ruled by Hamas. Two weeks ago it handed 20 rockets found in one of its schools to the local authorities, a move which many of its critics believe was equivalent to giving them to Hamas. Gunness said the representatives from the national consensus government who arrived to move the weapons had no connection to Hamas. Last week, when UNRWA discovered weapons one of its facilities, it did not immediately report the find and before it could figure out what to do, the weapons disappeared. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last week said he was outraged that rockets had been placed in UNRWA schools and that some of the weapons were now missing. He ordered the implementation of new regulations regarding any such discoveries in the future that would include a method by which the UN would dispose of weapons found in their facilities.
NO TITLE...ARTICLE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF
If Barack Hussein Obama is trying to shake the rumor that he’s a secret Muslim, he didn’t do himself any favors by posting a love letter to Islam on the White House website. In it, he makes the preposterous claims that Muslims essentially built America and are noted humanitarians. It came in the form of a celebration of the end of Ramadan, Islam’s holiest month, called Eid-al-Fitr.
The piece of revisionist history starts out: As Muslims throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, Michelle and I extend our warmest wishes to them and their families. This last month has been a time of fasting, reflection, spiritual renewal, and service to the less fortunate.
(?????????????) I know that when I think about Ramadan, and Muslims in general, the first thought that comes to mind is service to the less fortunate. Come on, name one Muslim humanitarian organization that reaches out to anyone who isn’t a jihadist. While Eid marks the completion of Ramadan, it also celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity and reinforces the obligations that people of all faiths have to each other, especially those impacted by poverty, conflict, and disease.
Again, I don’t know that Islam shares the same values as other peaceful religions. And if you think that’s a crazy notion, check this out: In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy. That is why we stand with people of all faiths, here at home and around the world, to protect and advance their rights to prosper, and we welcome their commitment to giving back to their communities. (FOR EXAMPLE: the Boston Marathon bombers, both attacks to the WTC, the yoyo who was going to plant a bomb in Times Square…)
I must have missed that section of the history book. As far as I can tell, Muslims didn’t really start coming to America until the 1960’s. So how is it that they helped building the fabric of our nation? Were George Washington and Thomas Jefferson also secret Muslims? Maybe he’s saying that since Muslim extremists attacked us on 9/11 we’ve been living in a police state. I would definitely be willing to give them credit for that. Finally, to show he is “down for the cause” and has mad Muslim street-cred, he ends with this: On behalf of the Administration, we wish Muslims in the United States and around the world a blessed and joyous celebration. Eid Mubarak. Eid Mubarak means “blessed celebration.
This year’s Ramadan address is an escalation from last year’s praise that Muslims “enrich our democracy and strengthen our economy” and “enrich our nation each day—serving in our government, leading scientific breakthroughs, generating jobs and caring for our neighbors in need.” They might be looking to “enrich” some uranium, as for the other stuff? Not so much.
This is part of a coordinated campaign to rewrite our history books and give credit for the founding of American to the fringe coalition that makes up the democrat’s voting base. By the time they are done, the US will have been built by homosexuals, feminists, African and Chinese labor and now apparently Muslims. The White guys that fought the revolution, framed the Constitution, and invented and industrialized everything will be pushed to the side as inconsequential villains. Then again, maybe this is just Obama struggling to hide his inner-Muslim. Perhaps it’s just too hard to keep his love for his “home team” down.

3 IDF soldiers killed in booby-trapped tunnel shaft in Gaza
Three IDF soldiers were killed in a booby-trapped tunnel shaft in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
St.-Sgt. Matan Gotlib, 21, from Rishon Lezion and St.-Sgt. Omer Hay, 21, of Savyon, were named as two of the three soldiers killed Wednesday.
The identity of the third soldier was just released: from Tel Aviv, 20, St-Sgt Guy Algranati. The latest fatalities brought Israel's military death toll in Operation Protective Edge to 56. The IDF stated that an additional 27 soldiers were injured in Gaza on Wednesday. Operation Protective Edge intensified after the deaths of 10 soldiers in Palestinian cross-border attacks on Monday. May they rest in peace and may the L-rd grant faith to their families to ease the burden of their absence.
Southern Command Major-Gen. Sami Turgeman said Wednesday evening that regarding destruction of Hamas's terror tunnels, the IDF's "mission will be completed within a number of days." Israel has balked at freeing up Gaza's borders under any de-escalation deal unless Hamas's disarmament is also guaranteed. Egypt said on Tuesday it was revising an unconditional truce proposal that Israel had originally accepted but Hamas rejected, and that the new offer would be presented to a Palestinian delegation expected in Cairo. An Israeli official said Israel might send its own envoy to Cairo. "We are hearing that Israel has approved a cease-fire but Hamas has not," an Egyptian official told Reuters, an account that the Netanyahu government neither confirmed nor denied. The government of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas voiced support on Tuesday for a 24-72 hour ceasefire. It said it was also speaking for Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri disputed that statement but confirmed there were "intensive, ongoing contacts" on a truce. Outside pressure has been building on Netanyahu to rein in his forces, while few Israelis want the operation to end now (THE LATEST POLL: 87%) The Gazan health ministry has said 1,287 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since Israel began its offensive in the Hamas-controlled enclave on July 8 with the declared aim of halting cross-border rocket fire.

WHAT ISRAEL IS UP AGAINST...
The Qassam rocket is a simple, steel artillery rocket developed and deployed by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas. Three models have been produced and used, with the first introduced in 2001. More generally, all types of Palestinian rockets fired into southern Israel, for example the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Al Quds rockets, are called Qassams by the Israeli media, and often by foreign media. The Qassam gained notoriety as the best-known type of rocket deployed by Palestinian militants mainly against Israeli civilians, but also some military targets during the Second Intifada of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The aim of the Qassam rocket design appears to be ease and speed of manufacture, using common tools and components. To this end, the rockets are propelled by a solid mixture of sugar and potassium nitrate, a widely available fertilizer. The warhead is filled with TNT and urea nitrate, another common fertilizer. They usually have a range of 20 kms. They are also called M75.
Katyusha multiple rocket launchers are a type of rocket artillery first built and fielded by the USSR during WW2. Multiple rocket launchers such as these deliver a devastating amount of explosives to a target area more quickly than conventional artillery, but with lower accuracy and requiring a longer time to reload. They are fragile compared to artillery guns, but are inexpensive and easy to produce. Katyushas are usually mounted on trucks. This mobility gave the Katyusha another advantage: being able to deliver a large blow all at once, and then move before being located and attacked with counter-battery fire. During the 2006 Lebanon War, Hezbollah fired between 3,970 and 4,228 rockets, from light truck-mounts and single-rail man-portable launchers. About 95% of these were Syrian-manufactured and had a range of perhaps up to 30 km. Hamas has launched 122-mm Grad-type Katyusha rockets from the Gaza Strip against several cities in Israel, although they are not reported to have truck-mounted launchers. Although Katyusha originally referred to the mobile launcher, today the rockets are often referred to as Katyushas. They are also called GRAD. There are also the ones called M302 or Super Grad with an effective range of 90 miles.

A radar system might stop mortar attacks, but that doesn’t change the truism that “the best defense is a good offense.” The IDF is testing out an Israeli-designed “Green Rock” radar system that can spot the source of mortar fire and allow potential victims to run for cover before they weapons hit their targets. Israel lost four soldiers on Monday when a Hamas mortar shell slammed into a building near the Gaza border, claiming four more lives and injuring six others. The Elta subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has been working on the system for several years and sped up their deployment for the IDF since the beginning of the Protective Edge war against Hamas. The operation Color Red early-warning system for Kassam rockets does not track mortar shells, which have a low trajectory. The Green Rock system’s identifying the source of fire not only gives people time to run for cover but also allowed soldiers to return fire and intercept the shell. The system is mobile and can be used on four-wheel vehicles and armored personnel carriers (APC). Another system under development to thwart mortar shell attacks is Rafael Advanced Defense System’s Iron Beam, which features a laser ray. Globes reported that the IDF is using new drones that have provided valuable intelligence to the military during the war.
