NOT A GOOD-BYE...OLD FRIEND OF THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL

President Peres Comforts Bereaved Families on Last Day in Office. Today is Israeli President Shimon Peres’ last day in office. While it will likely be difficult for him to say goodbye to the post he’s held for the past seven years, it must be even more difficult for him to leave his post while Israel is in the midst of Operation Protective Edge. President Shimon Peres spent his last night in office comforting bereaved families of soldiers who died in battle in the Gaza Strip. It has been an emotional week for him not only because he is leaving what he calls his gilded cage, but because he has spent time each day with grieving families. Though Peres’ departure will largely be overshadowed by the ongoing conflict in Israel, it is worth noting that the 90 year old was one of the most popular presidents in Israeli history. Peres was one of the most popular presidents in the history of the country, and finishes a full term of 7 years, during which he did a lot for Israel and completely changed the president’s role. During the seven years that had gone by, Peres focused on strengthening the Israeli society and creating unity among its different groups. During his reign he participate in 752 tours and meetings with Israeli citizens from Metula to Eilat, during which he met dozens of students and teenagers in schools and academia. While Peres was serving, the number of visitors to the president’s house reached half a million, by allowing people to come and meet with him, including hosting during holidays, and conducting fund raising events for different charities. It seems that this activity is what made Peres a favorite among the nation, with 81% supporting him during his last 4 years of serving as president.
