Hamas on Thursday is threatening to renew its rocket fire on
Israel when the current ceasefire ends at 8 a.m. on Friday if Israel does not
meet its demands. The Palestinian delegation has hardened its stance since the
arrival in Cairo of Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas is trying to create an image of victory on Thursday as a
Hamas spokesman announced that the war with Israel is not over. He said that
there are still Jihad warriors in the field with their fingers on the trigger
and they will not hesitate to shoot rockets at Tel Aviv. He also said that the
IDF did not eliminate all the terror tunnels leading from Gaza into Israel.
Israel said on Thursday that if Hamas renews its fire on its
southern region, the response will be harsh. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman
said that Israel will not bend to Hamas' demands which he said amount to
extortion. Sources in Israel confirm that the IDF has mobilized sufficient
forces to protect the citizens close to the Gaza border and that Israel will
renew its ground assault and will take control of Gaza if necessary. The Israel
Defense Ministry announced that the area within 40 kilometers of Gaza is still
considered a sensitive zone until Sunday when the situation will be reassessed.
Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon and Prime Minister Netanyahu met
with the President of the Red Cross on Thursday. While Hamas continues to
demand that the embargo on its port be lifted, Yaalon explained the problematic
nature of the request and Prime Minister Netanyahu demonstrated the potential
security risks pertaining to the terror tunnel threats. President Obama
clarified his position on Hamas.
