Has a solution to the
threat of tunnels been found? An army source announced that the IDF is
preparing to launch a defensive network which will protect the citizens living
near the border with Gaza. According to the source, the program is expected to
cost between 2 to 3 billion shekels and will include advance technology for
locating tunnels, as well as physical barriers intended to impede construction
of such tunnels. The program is expected to be operational within one year,
once the budget has been approved. The network will include a series of sensors spread out across the border,
which will be capable of alerting IDF forces to the digging of a potential
tunnel. Physical barriers will also be built in especially sensitive areas near
the border and neighboring communities, to further protect the citizens of the
south. The Defense Ministry
as well as the IDF’s Southern Command are leading the project. If the R&D
phase proves successful, the program could be ready within one year, according
to IDF sources.
