James Wright Foley (October 18, 1973 – c. August 19, 2014) was an American freelance photojournalist. He worked for the U.S. GlobalPost news company, until November 22, 2012, when he was abducted in northwestern Syria while covering the Syrian Civil War. In August 2014, he was decapitated in a filmed execution by representatives of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). Foley was the first American citizen to be executed by ISIS.

He graduated from the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2003. Also graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2008. Heartbreaking news is spreading like wildfire on social media and journalism channels.
Photojournalist James Wright Foley has reportedly died at the hands of extremist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Nearly two years ago, Foley was reported missing from Syria. He had reported from the Middle East over the past five years to share with the world news and images. Foley’s family never had a chance to say goodbye, and now colleagues, friends and family are grieving as they comprehend what happened. In the midst of the tragic news, reports indicate journalist Steven Joel Soltoff is being held by ISIS. They are demanding President Obama to cease all airstrikes or watch another innocent journalist die. Sotloff has been missing since last August.
Foley was last connected to the Global Post, the company released a statement after hearing of their colleague’s gruesome death. Philip Balboni, CEO and co-founder of the paper, stated they appreciate the messages of sympathy and support from the public, and ask for prayers for Foley’s family.
